College Sports Updates May 2011

Copenhagen Shield at Wellington
The College's boys and girls athletes combined on Saturday 14th May to win the Copenhagen Shield ahead of some of the best co-ed athletics teams in the country. Having finished runners up last year the team were in determined mood to go one better this year. Having won at Marlborough the week before the boys teams were in confident mood and the girls having finished second were determined not to be out down. The competition was of a very high level, previous winners Epsom and Wellington were strong as ever, with Marlborough and Cranleigh looked strong in some disciplines as did Hurst. However, it was the College that come out ahead with the final result being decided in the final round of 4 x 100m relays.

Brighton Sailing Team
Over the weekend of the 14th of May Brighton College sailing team took part in their first regatta of the term against Eastbourne and King's Canterbury on the sea at Eastbourne. It was a hot day with little wind and flat seas but despite all this our sailors excelled and kept the boats moving through the water against the strong tide. The captain, Charlie Runcorn (L6th, School) led the way with two first places and a second, whilst Carsten Rolles (L5th, School) surprised us all with an instinctive move around the wing mark. Where others had been sucked into the mark by the tide, he managed to clear it with the dagger board up, which demonstrated just how little wind there was! We saw Esteira Hiwaizi (L6th, Fenwick) and Charlotte Dodge (U5th, Seldon) make their first appearance for the sailing team and both were an asset to Brighton. Overall we came joint first with King's Canterbury and our sailors showed great promise for the remaining races.

Cricket - 1st XI Girls v MCC
The Girls 1st XI hosted the MCC in a 40 over match on the Home Ground. Brighton won the toss and decided to bat although were in a worrying position at 32 for 4. Captain, Sofie Cawley (70) and Rebecca Silk (32) built a fantastic 100 run partnership in front of the large crowd. The team ended up on 178. The MCC started well with an opening partnership of 41 but two quick wickets from Emma Adams (2-39) and 3 wickets each for Silk and Izi Noakes kept the College side in control. The MCC needed 15 runs off the last two overs but Brighton bowled tightly and fielded well to win by 7 runs. Rebecca Silk was awarded the MCC Spirit of Cricket cap for her 32 runs and bowling figures of 3 for 27 off 10 overs.
