David P Grigor (L. 1982-87)

I am one of 3 teachers in the UK as part of a select group of 16 worldwide this year, representing Scotland on the full scholarship underwritten by Honeywell Hometown Solutions. Only teachers completing the first year Space Academy can apply for the Advanced course. Once completed I can then apply to be an instructor at Space Academy.

I will be taking part in Space Shuttle simulations, scuba astronaut trainer and G force simulator, rocket launches and many other astronaut activities that prepare me for educating youngsters about NASA and space exploration.

To achieve this my application included my 'GET ON BOARD Space Academy Art Competition, that was launched last November throughout all 441 Secondary schools in Scotland by my Competition team. The competition encouraged students 12-14 to produce an art work on the theme 'Space Academy'. They comprised of 3 undergraduate art student from the ECA Edinburgh College of Art, and Gordon Duncan of the Accessible Art Company Director of ELSEN.

We have had 120 art work entries in from the Orkney's, to Isle of Tiree to Renfrewshire(Glasgow), Stirlingshire and the Borders. We have now short listed to 20 exceptional pieces and the final judging will take place on the 9 May. The winner will fly out to Huntsville to take up the full scholarship, with a flight chaperone or guardian.

I am currently still searching for funding for this project that is gathering great pace. We hope to have several exhibition venues in Glasgow and Edinburgh of very high profile. We have to clarify the venues in the next 2 months.
