After four years with the BBC Central European Services (managing broadcasts to Poland, Hungary and what was then Czechoslovakia), he became Head of the BBC Arabic Service in 1992, overseeing the launch of the award-winning bbcarabic.com news website and the expansion of BBC Arabic to become a 24-hour broadcast news service. His BBC Arabic work culminated in leading the output during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He retired from the BBC in 2004 and now teaches a post-graduate course on Turkish politics at London University's School of Oriental and African Studies.
