Gary attended Brighton College from the years 1958/59 to 1964, latterly as Head of School House. On leaving Brighton he went to the Gilbert & Ellis Islands for a year, under V.S.O., to assist the locals, using his diving expertise, to build coral causeways. During his career, he built on his experiences and worked for off-shore oil entities in the Middle East.
