Geoff was appointed Head of English at the College in 1948, and during his fifteen years on the staff was Housemaster of Aldrich, and Master in Charge of Cricket and Squash, as well as assisting with the running of several school societies. In 1963 he was appointed Headmaster of St Bees, but when he retired he and Joan at once returned to Brighton, where Geoff served for some time as a Governor of the College, and where they both provided a warm welcome for the large number of old pupils with whom he had kept in touch and whose affection led them frequently to his door.
Geoff loved the College, and his love was copiously returned. Generations of OBs will remember an immensely powerful influence, and a true friend. It would have been hard to have been a pupil in his time and not to have been marked by his warmth, dry humour, and uncompromising dedication to excellence. He produced a succession of distinguished academic achievements from his pupils, and two unbeaten cricket sides. His impact on the College was immediate and lasting, and for many lucky enough to have been touched by his genius he remains a standard by which others are judged.
Fuller notices will appear in due course in the Pelican and the Brightonian.
