Before taking up the post of Lord Speaker, Baroness D'Souza was Convenor of the Crossbench Peers (2007-11). As a Convenor she was a member of numerous committees. Baroness D'Souza has a special interest in human rights and development issues, and has been a trustee at a range of human rights and development organisations. She was director of an independent research group focusing on development and emergency aid and has research origins and alleviation of famine.
She was an independent for the UN and has always worked for the Nuffield Institute of Comparative Medicine and Oxford Brookes University.
Baroness D'Souza has holds a doctorate in Philosophy (Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford) and has taught anthropology at both the LSE and Oxford Brookes University. She has also lived and worked in Southern Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania.
Baroness D'Souza will be speaking on her work at the House of Lords.
