Laura Marsh (F. 2000-05)

Drafted in for the injured Nicola Shaw, the Sussex seam-bowler impressed the selectors with her performances throughout Super 4s and the Liverpool Victoria County Championship. She studied Sports Science with Management at Loughborough University where she made regular use of the ECB National Performance Centre based on the campus.

Marsh did not play Test cricket in 2007, but featured in three one-day internationals, recording her highest score with the bat, to date, of 23 and taking 3-49 against New Zealand at Blackpool. Having reinvented herself as an off-spinner, she helped England retain the Ashes in the one-off Test at Bowral in early 2008 and go unbeaten that summer. Marsh also helped England to World Cup and World Twenty20 glory in 2009.

  1. When you were at Brighton College, what did you want to be when you ‘grew-up’?
I always wanted to play sport professionally, I loved both hockey and cricket.
  2. What are you now you've grown up?
I play cricket for England as a full time professional.
  3. What is your best memory of school?
My best memory of school was definitely on the sports field. I had the amazing opportunity to tour Barbados when I was 13 and play both netball and cricket (with the boys).
  4. What was the best piece of advice you were given?
To try everything and get involved in as much as I could. I learnt so much in my school years by experiencing different things. These experiences have shaped me as a person and also gave me some of the sporting skills which have got me to where I am now.
  5. What does your job involve?
Travelling the world playing cricket. Meeting and learning to work with new people. Constantly pushing myself to be better whilst overcoming some difficult challenges along the way. Being a role model and inspiring other girls and boys to take up the game of cricket. Performing under pressure.
  6. What are the most challenging parts of your job?
Dealing with setbacks such as injury or losing games/tournaments. Being away from home for long periods of time. A lot of the time as a professional I am under pressure to perform. This can take its toll mentally so having coping strategies is really important. Having other things I enjoy doing away from cricket is important. I enjoy playing golf when I can to take my mind off things.
  7. What have you done that you are most proud of?
I am so proud that I have been able to represent my country for over 10 years. To now be a full time professional doing what I love is amazing. I have been a part of 3 World Cup wins. This summer was an incredible experience, lifting the World Cup at a sold out Lords. Something I only dreamt of when I was a 13 year old pupil at Brighton College (Fenwick House).
  8. What is the single thing that would most improve the quality of your life?
    Sunshine!!
  9. What are the three objects you would take with you to a desert island?
    Phone, Bear Grylls, pillow
  10. How would you like to be remembered?
A hard working and dedicated team mate that inspired and helped others to achieve their goals
