Lawyer Lexie Williams (Wi. 2013-15) the ETA Development Officer for Cornwall and Assistant Coach to the England Touch Rugby Women’s Open team, led the workshop and was assisted by three ETA representatives. England Touch is the national governing body for touch rugby in England and was set up in 1995. It is growing from strength to strength as an organisation and is currently in the process of becoming affiliated with Sport England.
Lexie delivered a 45-minute presentation that explored what England Touch is about, why it should be taught in schools, how it should be taught in schools and how the skills required in touch fit in with the national curriculum core competency skills.
The Pirates also took part in a quick quiz, which caused much hilarity and competitiveness between the players! Lexie led the players onto the pitches for a practical touch rugby session, with the final activity of the day being a match between the ETA players and the Pirates themselves.
Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the games and it looked like there was some natural aptitude for both playing and refereeing touch rugby amongst the Pirates. The players were incredibly involved throughout the course of the day – there could certainly be some touch rugby players amongst the Pirates if they wanted to join in with some local sessions!
Lexie said:
“It was a privilege to provide the workshop to the Cornish Pirates and I am really looking forward to working with them more in the future!”
