"The Old Brightonians put me in contact with Mr. Sandford of Wilson Sandford Ltd, Chartered Accountants based in Hove, which resulted in a week-long placement with the firm. This was a fantastic experience!
Having completed the first year of my course, I was well equipped with the basics of accounting but to be able to apply it in a real-world setting was very instructional, interesting and confirmed I had made the right choice of degree and career.
To my surprise, I was given substantive work to do on existing client accounts including posting trial balances, reconciling transactions, scheduling movements in directors’ accounts and preparing certificates of deduction of income tax. I also learned to use professional accounting software including Iris and Xero. As I limp back to Exeter for my second year following my recent knee surgery, I feel the placement will better help me relate my future academic studies to professional accountancy practice and I will start enthusiastically seeking my third year placement.
I would like to very much thank the Old Brightonians and Mr. Sandford for this opportunity and the staff at Wilson Sandford for their patience and support during my time there!"
