We asked for your help to try and ensure that the graves or memorials of as many fallen Old Brightonians as possible were visited this year on 11 November.
In response to our call, we have been overwhelmed by the emails and photographs that the entire Brighton College community have sent in from their visits to graves and memorials. Pupils, staff, parents, Old Brightonians, and even members of our international schools visited the graves and memorials of dozens of our fallen, both on Remembrance Day itself, and in the days and weeks leading up to it.
These included many local visits, to graves in Brighton, Ovingdean, Newtimber, Bognor Regis, and Haywards Heath. Among these local graves visited include that of Frank Stuttaford (Ch. 1930-34), who was tragically killed by a bomb in 1940 when he was only 15 years old, and John Fellowes (Ha. 1925-30), who died of silicosis, which he had contracted whilst serving in Egypt, in November 1945, after the Second World War had come to an end.
There were also many visits to graves and memorial across the world, including the graves of many our WW1 fallen in France and Belgium. One of these graves was that of Eric Halliwell (Sc. 1910-13), at the Moorseele Military Cemetery in Belgium. Eric and his pilot were killed in September 1917, while carrying out observation behind enemy lines.
Other visits ranged as widely as Malta, Berlin, the Netherlands, and Singapore. In Thailand, representatives from Brighton College Bangkok visited Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the grave of Old Brightonian Dennis Clark (Sc. 1929-31). Dennis died in 1943 while forced to work on the Thai-Burma railway as a Prisoner of War.
In total, we received well over 100 photographs from your visits. We are now in the process of collating all of these wonderful photographs, and we will share them on the Brighton College Remembers website, posting them in the individual entries of the fallen whose grave or memorial were visited.
We would like to thank everyone who took the time to visit a grave or memorial as part of this years’ Remembrance, and pay their respects to the bravery and sacrifice of our fallen.
