1. When you were at Brighton College, what did you want to be when you ‘grew-up’?

3. What is your best memory of school?
At the time I attended Brighton College (1960-66), the science building had just been opened in 1958, and that is where I spent a lot of time cultivating my passion for chemistry.
4. What was the best piece of advice you were given?
It is too long ago to remember for sure, but I recall receiving very good advice on how to apply for a university place. I went on to study Chemistry at New College at Oxford University.
5. What do you do/did you do as a career?
I am now Whitehead Professor of Chemistry at Yale University.
6. What does/did your job involve?
Mainly teaching & research
7. What are the most challenging parts of your job?
Looking after the students.
8. What have you done that you are most proud of?
Having had 150 students work in the labs with me.
9. What is the single thing that would most improve the quality of your life?
I think all is going well enough at the moment!
10. What are the three objects you would take with you to a desert island?
Austen novels, music collection & player + solar power unit, short wave radio to call for rescue!
11. How would you like to be remembered?
By the students as someone who helped them.
