At their annual awards ceremony, RIBA presented the College with a South East Downland regional award for the boarding house. This is the third such award for Brighton College, both the Simon Smith and Skidelsky Buildings having also received the honour in 2012. Brighton College was also named the Royal Institute's South East Client of the Year for the second time in as many years - a very rare privilege. Congratulations to all involved.
Nearly 130 years after the original designs were drawn up, a fifth boarding house at last completes the south east corner of the quad at Brighton College, fulfilling the 1880s vision of Sir Thomas Graham Jackson (a pupil of the College from 1850-53).
Partially completed in 1887, added to in 1929-30, the boarding house was finished in Sept 2013 and officially opened by Sir John Chilcot, President of the Old Brightonians on Saturday 5th October.
Amongst those celebrating this magnificent addition to the College was Head of House Lucy Beauvallet, runner up in the latest BBC Young Apprentice, who thanked supporters on behalf of the girls who have settled so wonderfully into their new home.
With more boarders at the school than at any other time in its history, and the demand for boarding continuing to grow at an unprecedented rate, New House increases substantially the number of pupils Brighton is able to accommodate, as well as housing them in very considerable style.
Constructed in flint and brick, the house complements the original George Gilbert Scott and Sir Thomas Graham Jackson buildings. Inside, the house is fantastically modern and beautifully appointed. Its luxurious, top-floor common room with panoramic views across the quad is a particular favourite with the girls who live there.
New House was designed by award-winning architects Allies and Morrison, who last year won a highly acclaimed Royal Institute of British Architects National Award for the Simon Smith building which also sits in the historic quad at Brighton College. The interiors were designed by London based DDSB Design, and are stylish and contemporary, with practical social spaces complete with quirky and colourful soft furnishings to create a homely environment.
